Cathy Knox started her career as a social worker Newfoundland in 1977. She then went back to school and graduated from law school in 1984. She became an advocate for persons with disabilities at a personal level from an early age as she had a younger sister who had Down Syndrome and she often helped her parents address issues involving her care. When her parents passed away she became her primary advocate until she passed away in 2016. At a professional level she worked as legal counsel for the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living for a few years after moving to Saskatoon in 1995 and she continues to work with some clients and their families.
